Ecommerce sites come with an online store. On the left, under Store, you can add products, manage orders, and connect to Stripe to start accepting payments. The first step to setting up your store is to add products.
Adding a product is as simple as filling out a form. This guide will go through the options for each product.
Basically, to add a new product:
When adding a product, add:
After each step, you'll see examples from Deffell’s Pants: the industry innovator in leg coverings for over 100 years. As it turns out, Deffell’s Pants has recently expanded into torso coverings.
This guide will walk you through the process of adding their new western-style shirt.
The Product Details section has a couple parts:
The title of your product tells customers what it is. Here are couple tips to writing titles:
For the Deffell’s western shirt, a good title is:
Deffell’s Western Snap Shirt with Flower Pattern—Long Sleeve
There, the description goes from general (starting with the brand and type of shirt) to more specific (that it has a flower pattern and long sleeves).
Tell your customers what your product is. Here are a couple tips to writing descriptions:
When writing your description, you have various formatting tools. For example, instead of just making text bigger, mark it as a heading:
These options refer to the level of the heading. Think of a book. H1 is the top-level heading—like a chapter in a book. H2 is a section in that chapter, and so on. Properly marked up text helps search engines (and customers) understand the structure of your pages.
For the western shirt description, use:
This authentic Deffell’s Western shirt uses sturdy stitching and high-quality materials. The front yokes are carefully embroidered with delicate roses, so not only is your torso covered, it’s covered in style.
• Double-pocket design
• Pencil slot in left pocket flap
• Snap buttons
• 100% polyester with patented Deffell’s texture
• Spread collar
• Embroidered roses
When you add products, your store can track the inventory, and you can add other variants of the product—like red and blue, or small, medium, and large. Specifically, you can set:
The Price is just how much the product costs. Add the amount without a dollar sign.
For the western shirt, the price is:
Some templates have a Featured Product section on the home page. This way, you can give certain products extra attention.
To make a product a Featured Product:
With its embroidered roses, the western shirt is definitely a featured product.
Add the category of product here. This option lets customers browse categories of products, like pants or dog collars.
To give a product multiple categories, seperate each with a comma. For example:
Jeans, Pants, Work Clothes
Deffell’s mainly makes leg coverings, but the western shirt is obviously not a leg covering. So to distinguish it. Give it the category:
Enable this option, and as new orders come in, your store will keep track of how many of each product you have left.
Once you enable Track Inventory, you'll be able to enter a quantity. You can enter a number here, but if you have multiple variants (different sizes, colors, styles, etc.), you'll want to set a quantity for each variant. Keep reading to learn how to do that.
For the western shirt, enable Track Inventory, but don't enter a quantity yet. Later, you'll enter quantities for each variant (like Small, Red western shirts and Extra Large, Blue western shirts).
If your product comes in multiple sizes, colors, or has other varieties, don’t create separate products—just add the variants here.
To add variants (size, color, and so on):
Tip The order that you enter the values here is the order that they will display on your site. For example, for Size options, you would probably want to enter the values in order from smallest to largest—S, M, L, XL.
To delete a variant:
So now that you know how to add variants, add some for the western shirt:
Based on the options you added for the western shirt, your store can create 12 variants. Each of which accept individual prices and quantities. The western shirt is experimental, and while each variant has the same price, Deffell’s created only 50 of each variant.
Like when writing the product description, consider that your customers can’t hold, touch, or even actually see your products. Add pictures that show the important details of your products.
When adding images, consider these steps:
Not all images work well on the web. Here are some facts to keep in mind:
Tip After you upload images, Moboom has a basic image editor that you can use to crop, resize, and touch up photos. If you want something more advanced, Pixlr is a good free app for editing images. It’s web based, so it will work with any operating system. Read more about editing images.
To upload images:
Tip You don't have to add images one at a time. You can select and drag multiple images at once.
Once you've added images, you'll see an alt text field on each image. The alt text is what search engines use to understand what the image is depicting. Add a few words or short sentence that describes what the product is all about.
Screen-reading software also uses alt text. Instead of seeing pictures, your visually-impaired customers will hear alt text, so make sure the text is meaningful.
Once you’ve uploaded images, use the built-in editor if you need to touch up images.
To edit a photo:
We recommend that you give all images the same proportions (the same height-to-width ratio). For example, use images that are all square or 2:3.
Different sized images will stand out on pages that show multiple products side-by-side (like on the Featured Products section of your home page).
The editor has a variety of features. As mentioned earlier, images with different proportions will look odd when placed next to each other. With that in mind, the Crop and Resize features will probably be the most useful for you.
On the Crop tab, set the proportions of an image. For example: Square, 2:3, 3:5, and so on. We recommend that you set the same proportions for every image.
On the Resize tab, set the exact pixel size of an image. Use this feature to ensure that an image is an exact size. While images don’t have to be the same size, they should at least have equivalent proportions.
For the western shirt, include an image for each color, and include close-up shots of the embroidery, snap buttons, and pencil slot.
So, first save the following images onto your computer (right-click each image and select Save Image As).
Now, to add the images:
Next, add alt text:
- Western shirt in blue
- Western shirt in red
- Western shirt in black
- Embroidered rose pattern on shoulders
- Left pocket has a pencil slot
Your can calculate the shipping cost for each item in different ways:
Flat rate shipping is just a dollar amount that’s in addition to the cost of the item.
For example, if you set the rate to $5 for a shirt and a customer bought a $70 shirt, the total cost would be $75. If the customer bought 2 shirts, the total cost would be $150 ($75 + $75).
To set a flat rate:
For the calculated rate, you enter the various details of a product:
And then when a customer buys the product, your site calculates the cost to ship the item via Australia Post from your postcode to the customer’s postcode.
Tip With Australia Post, the most important factor in determining cost is the weight. So don’t worry too much about getting the dimensions exactly correct.
Also, keep in mind that Australia Post doesn’t ship big items. So if you sell refrigerators, talk with a different major shipping company and use the Flat Rate option.
People don’t like to pay for shipping. And any extra charges can be deterrent to online shopping.
To enable free shipping:
Tip If you’re concerned about cost, offer customers free shipping by factoring the average cost of shipping into the cost of each product. To determine the average, use the Australia Post shipping calculator to calculate several shipping costs. Postcode and weight is what will really affect the cost.
Another option is to offer free shipping as a promotion: for a limited time on only specific products. So pick a few products every week, and then make these your Featured Products.
Consider that when a customer orders one item, the shipping calculations are pretty accurate. The dimensions and weight of a packed box will always be more than that of the item.
However, if customers only ever ordered 1 item, you could just use the packed dimensions and weight, and your calculated shipping rate would always be accurate.
When a customer orders several different items, the calculations start to get wacky. For example, if you’re shipping a necklace, the same size package can probably hold several necklaces, so the actual cost to ship 3 necklaces won’t be much more than the cost to ship 1.
The system doesn’t realize this fact, so it might charge a higher shipping cost than is actually necessary.
Also for example, a box that ships 5 bottles of wine may be the same size as a box that ships 6 bottles of wine. So the system may undercharge someone who orders 5 bottles.
Taking all that into account, here are different methods for dealing with this issue:
Deffell’s has decided to go with the free shipping option. Because Deffell’s also has retail stores, they want their prices online to match up with their prices in store. And actually, the cost of shipping from a warehouse is less than the cost of retail space plus retail employees, so free shipping makes sense.
To enable free shipping:
Search engines take certain details from your site to display in search results. So when adding a product, consider those details carefully, as they’ll determine whether someone clicks a link to your site or not.
Each page has a title that’s used by browsers and by search engines when displaying information about a page. Keep your title at 55 characters or less, as search engines typically cut off titles after 55 characters.
All that said, if you’ve written your product title correctly, you might be able to just use that. Since the important information is up front, if the end of the title is cut off, you might not lose much.
So for the western shirt, use:
Deffell’s Western Snap Shirt with Flower Pattern—Long Sleeve
If a search engine were to cut that title off at 55 characters, the title would look like:
Deffell’s Western Snap Shirt with Flower Pattern—Long ...
When a search engine displays your page on a list of search results, the summary that's shown is generally the text that you enter here.
Here are some quick tips to writing your description:
For the western shirt, you want to sell the concept, explain the shopping experience, and then include a call to action. Here’s a meta description that does all that:
Maybe you're a cowboy, or maybe not. Either way, you're wearing a Deffell's Western shirt. Free returns if you're not satisfied. Browse Deffell's today.
You can set the end of each product’s URL. The URL helps search engines understand what the page is about, but it also tells customers who just see the link (either in their browser history or shared by a friend) what to expect.
The first part of the URL is the same for every product. This first part will look something like
http://deffells-pants.site.storekit.com.au/product/. For the last part, which you can customize, use words separated by hyphens. Don’t include capital letters, spaces, or symbols (e.g., !@#$%^&*’).
If you don't have any preference on what the URL should be, just leave it blank, and your site will use the product's name seperated by hyphens.
By default, when you add a product, it’s hidden from your customers. Make a product visible in your store by changing its Visibility.
This feature lets you preload your store with hidden products before you’re ready to start selling them. Then when you’re ready, just make the products visible.
Go ahead and make the western shirt visible. It’s not the kind of shirt you keep hidden. And that’s all for the western shirt, so at the top of the page, click Save to finish adding the shirt.
Once you’ve added a product, you might want to later update quantities, add new pictures, change the description, and so on.
So, to edit a product:
You have two options for removing products:
You don’t have to delete a product to remove it from your site—you can just hide it. That way, your customers can’t see the product, but if you want to add it back to your site, just make it visible again.
To hide a product:
Note To make the product visible, just edit it again, and select Show this item.
If you’re sure that you’ll never sell a product again, and you don’t want it cluttering up your Products list, delete it.
